REDUCING YOUR

CARBON FOOTPRINT

There is a saying “only buy what you need” that should be the benchmark we all live by. When doing your next seasonal Spring Clean … be completely ruthless, if it doesn’t fit now, and you aren’t planning a radical lifestyle change, the chances of it fitting next season are non-existent. Gathering up your unused clothing, shoes, toys and household items is the easy part … Finding a outlet that actually distributes goods where they are needed involves a lot of research. I would love to say that those bags you dropped off at your local charity made their way to the children or homeless you intended them for but the reality of living in a country with so much crime and corruption is that in many instances the staff working at these establishments claim the goods for themselves before they ever reach their intended recipients . Do your homework.  Unless you are giving the articles to the needy yourself, make sure that the charity you choose is as ethical as they claim to be!

FOOD & WARM

BLANKETS

Every community has them, turning a blind eye is not going to make them go away so accept that with a national unemployment rate of 25%, many South Africans are homeless and some may even live in your community. Shelters are safe havens for the lucky few, but for the majority the reality is bitter cold nights spent sleeping on park benches, in doorways, alleyways , cardboard boxes, abandoned buildings or underground tunnels. Identify the homeless in your community. You don’t have to give them money, but you can show compassion towards their plight. Kindness comes in many guises (a meal, a warm blanket, temporary work or shelter, a kind word or a smile). Help these people to find their dignity and sense of self-worth again.

SPONSORSHIP &

MONETARY ASSISTANCE

Supporting your favorite wildlife foundation, sponsoring a child or donating funds towards a cause you consider worthy are all ways to positively contribute towards change. But do you really know where your money is going? Finding the right cause is like searching for a needle in a haystack, considering the sheer volume of charities that exist in South Africa. and all wanting a piece of the proverbial pie. The challenge for donors is making sure you know the charity you support is legit and that the money you donate goes exactly to the cause you intended it to and not into the back pocket of some unscrupulous scam artist. The sad truth is that criminals are making BIG MONEY by finding causes that tug- at-the-human-heart strings and unsuspecting donors world wide are literally being duped out of their hard earned cash because they did not doing their homework. If you are unsure, support locally. That way you can get in your car and visit the offices or if you are supporting a project , for example: to build a school, you will literally be able to see the progress your donation made with your own eyes. Whether it be wildlife conservation, environmental issues, humanitarian relief or community upliftment projects, your town will have a number of NPO’s worthy of your donations.

ADOPTION OR

FOSTER CARE

Whether it is temporary or permanent, the plight of orphans in South Africa is dire, with an estimated 3,8 million children facing a bleak future inside government institutions. Bringing joy, love, happiness and hope to a child whose fate is uncertain is the ultimate gift one can give another human being. For those individuals who are financially able and emotionally willing, foster care or adoption is the first step towards alleviating the dreadful plight South Africa’s children find themselves in. For wildlife enthusiasts, adopting animals is also an option offered by many organizations. Whether you are adopting a cheetah through an outreach program, an eagle through a sanctuary, a rhino from extinction or a dog from your local SPCA, their future ensures the future of their species.

THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO VOLUNTEER .. CHOOSE ONE THAT WORKS FOR YOU

SPONSORSHIP &

ADVERTISING

A great way for businesses to get involved is to endorse community projects, causes and organizations through long term sponsorships and advertising. This not only strengthens your own brand image, but also goes great lengths to ensuring that these foundations continue the good work they are doing in local communities. Do your homework, find the best fit for your organization and commit to a long term relationship which will be mutually beneficial to both parties.
